People are gonna say what they are gonna say about this one. "Are you playing a gooner furry game?". Not to be that guy, but past the screenshot of the main quest giver that every moron on instagram shows as the eye-catcher for this game, lays a surprisingly deep and fun local (and online coop) "MMO Styled" rpg. It just so happens that you play as an animal, and can give them big ol honkers...if you want! I bought the game because it was cute, and looked like something that would be fun to play during some downtime near the holiday season. I found myself really enjoying the time I spent in this game, and despite it all, would suggest this game for anyone who wants some nice combat, and to scratch a RPG itch - without having to dedicate your entire life to an MMO, or 90+ hours to a traditional RPG.
The game starts out with a cute little character creator, with options that get highlighted by those online, and most people don't go much further. It starts as a pretty typical MMO, where you run a couple fetch quests, level up, get weapons, that sort of stuff. Not really my bag, and I was ready to give it up, but once I start getting into combat my whole opinion of the game started to shift from "this is a cute little game Ill play for a few hours" probably most similar to webfishing or something, to "oh wow, this combat is really good - I can see myself sinking some time into this". 30 hours later, 2-3 characters, some co-op, some bosses beat and I think its safe to say I enjoyed what I played.
One of the best things about this game, is it feels like a roguelike - meaning, you can get in and out of the game and some dungeons in quick bursts, which for me make a game like this approachable. Only got 20 mins? Perfect amount of time to run through a dungeon for some rewards. The grind loop is there, fight the same boss a few times and get some sweet rewards. I really enjoy the loop of it all, and it really helped clear my head at a particularly stressful time. The ability to play a few rounds of something, is the key to making me come back over and over again.
On top of being nicely packaged product, from the music, the gameplay, and the look, the game just had a major update and making me want to experience a fuller product. It even has co-op that works seamlessly, another reason for me to give this a shot! Plus at the time of writing, the developer was able to get controller support out - which is a super nice touch to be able to play this on the go, or even with my wife who is a controller girly. Overall, I enjoy my time with the game and I don't really have much to even write it down. It just is a good game, and a game that to me is fun to revisit - one that I will continue to check out over the course of the years, much like other roguelikes I own. There is just nothing quite like it, and I urge people to go past the first impression and give it a shot. Whats wrong...you afraid you might like it?
